Verse 273: Eight-fold path is the best path, Four Noble truth is the best truth, detachment is the best belief system (dhamma) and buddha is the best guide.

Verse 274-275: Eight-fold path brings enlightenment.  Embark on it and confound Mara (evil).  This path will end all misery.

Eight-fold path is fairly similar to the astang yog.  It covers the intent, actions, beliefs.

1. right view
2. right intention
3. right speech
4. right action
5. right livelihood
6. right effort
7. right mindfulness
8. right concentration

Verse 276: You will have to do your own austerity, the learned can only show you the way.  You will have to embark on the journey yourself. This is different from several ritual based religious practices which suggest that one can pay the priest to perform austerities.

Verse 277: The whole world is impermanent.  Knowing this truth will set you free.

Verse 278: The whole wold is full of sorrow.  Knowing this truth will set you free.

Verse 279: All phenomenon is non-self.  Knowing this truth will set you free.  These three are basic foundations–impermanence, suffering and non-self (anatta or anatmanam).  All such thinking is without a separate thinker (self).  The thoughts, perceptions, forms, sensations emerge spontaneously.

Verse 280: One who does not exert effort when it is due can never attain knowledge. This is general good advice for everyone–a student studying for SAT or a bhikku seeking universal truths

Verse 281: Control you speech, control your mind and control your body (do not do anything to abuse it).  This way purifying three ways of performing action, follow the path laid down in Eight-fold path.

Verse 282: Yoga (sense of unity) gives insight to knowledge, ayoga (sense of distinction) gives rise to ignorance.  Knowing this one should purse enlightenment. Shows that the Eight-fold path and yog had a lot in common.

Verse 283: Cut down the desires, not a tree (refers to eliminating the desires not just doing austerities with the body).  Desires give rise to fear.

Verse 284: Remove lust from your heart completely.  Only then you can conquer desires.

Verse 285: Remove the love for self, pursue the eight-fold path to find peace.

Verse 286-287: We make a lot of plans for months or even years ahead, but do not realize that the life can end anytime.  One must not delay the work on seeking the truth.

Verse 287: Attachment to ones kin is of no use and in death the kin is of no use to anyone.  Don’t delay your journey due to attachment of kinsfolk.

Verse 289: Once you realize the truth of the path, you will become self-restrained and wise and proceed towards nirvana.
