Please suggest which scripture should we explore next……here are my selections. Most of these would required further prioritization (as there are several texts) but at least we will narrow down the direction.
1.Vishnu Sahasranamam – given it follows immediately on the conclusion of the war just as the Gita precedes the war, it could be a logical choice
2. Vedanta/Upanishads- Katha, Isa Vasya, Keno, Taittiriya, Brhad Aranyaka, Chandogya, Mundaka and Mandukya would be the most obvious ones
3. Srimad Bhagavatta Mahapurana – easily the Emperor of the Puranas and such extraordinary combination of stories and spiritual philosophy right through
4. Devi Mahatmyam – the power of MahaMaya. Again stories and philosophy of the highest order
5. The actual Vedas themselves – Taittiriya Samhita and Aranyaka, ShataPata Brahmana, The 10th Mandala of the Rik Veda specifically
I am leaning towards reading Dhammapadda (the first compilation of Buddha’s sayings). Set up in 423 verses. Written in Pali originally though several translations are available.
One needs to be conscious of the fact that in moving from the Sastras (Gita, Upanishads, Samhitas, Puranas….etc) and taking up the Jaina (jain) or Buddhist scriptures, one is moving from an Astika philosophy to a Nastika / Shramanic one i.e. From the Absolute Brahman known through the Vedas to a Relative Perceived truth independent of a Supreme Force
Whilst each of these is arguably consistent internally and externally, it is impossible to reconcile the two as there is either a Supreme Force supporting the Universe or there is not -cannot be both
All the best Sandeep, will wait for you to complete the Shramanic work and come back
Sri
Thank you for setting the expectation. Since I know little (pop version of Buddhism), let me digest some more and better understand it a bit more.
I know there is a lot more in the Upnishads and Vedas themselves. This is more like an exploratory tour before the going deeper.
