Hold that thought

Frequently used but seldom practiced words. How many times we look forward in anticipation of a favorite meeting, dinner, party or vacation. We plan, visualize and even dream about how great it will be to be sitting on that beach chair during our next vacation sipping a drink with mini umbrella in it. But when the time comes, we do not necessarily spend time in the moment. For example, just yesterday I was craving a mango and asked for a slice of mango post dinner. I was watching some television with my children when I was given the plate with the mango slice. Ah! The mango, I thought. And then next time I thought of the mango was when I tried to dig out some mango pulp but found that it was all gone. I was so deeply engrossed in the TV and my children that I had completely missed the whole process of eating the mango. (I heard of similar experience being described by a Buddhist monk). So what was I craving for earlier in the day? And how did that craving go away since I did not consciously enjoy the mango? Similarly we may want a particular job, a specific mate or some position. But when we get it, how long are we able to hold on to the feeling of satisfaction. And why do we almost immediately start thinking about the next thing.
Hold that thought, and savor it!
